Musawah & CEWLA Joint Thematic Report on Egypt (2021)

In September 2021, Musawah and the Center for Egyptian Women’s Legal Assistance (CEWLA) submitted a Joint Thematic Report on Egypt to the CEDAW Committee for review during the 80th session. This report examines Egypt’s legal frameworks and practices that enforce de jure and de facto discrimination against women in the following areas: male guardianship framework(qiwamah and wilayah); marriage; violence against women in the family; child marriage; divorce rights; and custody and guardianship of children. The report also includes the detrimental effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and incorporates substantive inputs by women’s rights activists from Egypt.
