Musawah Thematic Report on Iraq (2019)
In November 2019 – Musawah submitted a Thematic Report on Iraq to the CEDAW Committee for review at its 74th Session in Geneva, Switzerland. This report examines Iraqi laws and practices that enforce de jure and de facto discrimination against women in the following areas: discriminatory legal framework, child marriage, forced marriage, temporary marriage, polygamy and violence against women.
Musawah Oral Statement on Iraq (2014)
In February 2014 – The Musawah Thematic Report on Iraq and Bahrain was submitted to the CEDAW Committee for review at its 57th Session in Geneva, Switzerland. Musawah challenged the ways the government used religion to justify non-compliance. This report examines Iraqi laws and practices that enforce direct and de jure discrimination against women in the following areas: early, forced, and temporary marriage; polygamy; divorce; violence against women; and Article 41 of the Iraqi Constitution of 2005. This is the Oral Statement on Iraq delivered to the 57th Session of the CEDAW Committee.

In 2016, Musawah began compiling country tables containing an overview of legislative frameworks, available case law, policies, procedures and practices in the 12 principal areas of concern relating to Muslim family laws. Law reforms in multiple Muslim contexts proves that these laws are based on fiqh and thus not divine or unchangeable, and so must be reformed to address concerns and realities of people living today.
