Echoes of Hope Synopsis

Ernawati and her husband Cecep Karama are young Islamic scholars who run the Nurulhuda Islamic Boarding School in Garut, West Java, one of the areas with a high rate of child marriage in Indonesia. In 2012-2018, Ernawati served as the head of the madrasah. At that time, she found many female students who were suddenly absent and did not take the graduation exam because they were married off by their parents for economic reasons. Her concern about this condition encouraged Ernawati to make changes in various ways, educating the local community, parents/guardians of students, teachers and also students at her Islamic boarding school. After going through many efforts, in 2024, the Nurulhuda Islamic Boarding School succeeded in inviting the local Religious Affairs Office to sign an MoU to prevent child marriage. Ernawati and her husband’s efforts and education about gender equality became a motivation for their students, one of whom was Mita who chose to pursue her dream by studying at university instead of getting married, and she is also motivated to make changes in her hometown. Ernawati & the other characters in this film give us hope that everyone can take any step towards making useful changes.
