Musawah declares that equality in the family is necessary because many aspects of our current Muslim family laws and practices are unjust and do not respond to the lives and experiences of Muslim families and individuals. They are often used to deny women and men dignified choices in life. There cannot be equality in society without equality in the family.
This section contains information from various countries about why and how equality and justice in the family are necessary and possible in their national contexts.
It also contains links to Muslim family laws or laws in countries that have significant Muslim majority or minority populations.
Finally, it provides some examples of the effect of family laws through life stories of how family laws affect people’s lives in very real and meaningful ways.
See the Musawah Framework for Action (available in English, French, Arabic, Malay and Persian) for more information on Musawah's conceptual framework and core principles.
